Dental Fillings Fort Worth, TX
Fillings are one of the most common restorative dentistry procedures that we perform every single day. HomeTown Dental at Belknap is here to help you with your fillings every step of the way, whether you need a new one or need maintenance on an old one.
What Is a Dental Filling?
Dental fillings are exactly what they sound like - a material is used to fill in a cavity, crack, fracture, or other damaged area. A filling restores the tooth’s ability to do all the important things that it needs to do, from chewing to talking. Without a filling, the damage can spread and get worse until a root canal or more invasive procedure is required.
Do You Need A Filling?
While almost 90% of Americans will get a cavity at some point in their lives, cavities are not the only reason you might want to get a filling. Teeth can be injured by all sorts of everyday activities, even just eating. A filling is a great option for anyone that has a minor crack or other damage, or who routinely bites their nails or grinds their teeth. If you have more severe damage then you might be a better candidate for a crown or an implant.
Picking the Right Type of Filling For You
Everyone is familiar with the silver filling, known as an amalgam filling, but in fact there are many more kinds than just that. While silver fillings are durable and affordable, they require the removal of healthy parts of your teeth and are very obvious in your mouth, even when at the back of the jaw. Many patients instead prefer to opt for a tooth-colored composite filling. We can even remove an old silver filling and replace it with one that precisely matches the hue of the rest of your natural teeth. On the more expensive end of the spectrum are ceramic fillings, which can last for over fifteen years and do not stain as easily as composite fillings do.
What You Can Expect When Getting a Filling
Getting a filling is a routine procedure that our team of professionals has plenty of experience with. We will give you some local anesthesia and then use a special tool to extract the decayed portion of the tooth. After that, it is time to insert the filler and polish it up. For fillings that more closely resemble natural teeth there are a few extra steps. We have to physically apply the tooth-colored layer and then use a unique light to “bake” each layer and bond it to the tooth. Depending on your unique oral healthcare needs, we might schedule a follow-up appointment to check-in and see how your new filling is holding up.
