If you are looking to give your smile an upgrade with a simple and effective cosmetic treatment, then crowns are a great choice. At HomeTown Dental at Belknap, our dental experts are well-versed in using crowns to heal a number of different dental defects. No matter what your unique oral health needs are, we have a crown that is just right for you.
What Is a Dental Crown?
The outer surface of a tooth is actually what us dentists refer to as a “crown.” The crown of the tooth is everything that is visible above the gumline. A dental crown is a cap-like device that goes over this portion of your natural tooth, which means it does not extend into the root. Some dental crowns cover the whole outer surface while others only cover part of it. Every crown that we design is completely unique because every patient’s teeth are completely unique.
Are You a Good Candidate For a Crown?
Many patients can benefit from a crown. A crown can fix a broad range of issues, including fractures, chips, and decay. If a tooth is falling apart a crown can help hold it together, and a crown can also help protect a sensitive tooth or a tooth undergoing another cosmetic or restorative treatment.
Which Material Is Right For Your Crown?
We offer a number of different options to construct your crown from. We will work closely with you to determine which material is best for your particular needs, including the visibility of the crown when smiling, the type of tooth to be crowned, your insurance, and your own personal preferences. Composite resin is a good affordable option, though it is not as durable as other choices. Most of our patients opt for porcelain or ceramic crowns, as these options most closely match the color of natural teeth. Temporary crowns are made from stainless steel.
What to Expect When Having a Crown Placed
Temporary crowns can be placed on the same day, but permanent, custom-fitted crowns will require multiple visits to our office to place. During your initial visit, one of our dental pros will give you a complete and thorough examination to make sure that a crown is the best option. Once we are sure your tooth can support a crown, we will start making the changes to the tooth so that a crown can safely and carefully be placed. We will then make a mold of your teeth that will be used to manufacture your permanent, custom-fitted crown. You will get a temporary crown, so you have immediate use of all your teeth, and once your custom crown is done, you can come on back and we will finish the procedure.
