Cleanings
Fort Worth, TX

Woman talking to HomeTown Dental Dentist during dental examRegular teeth cleanings might seem basic, but they are one of the most important things you can do for your teeth. At HomeTown Dental at Belknap, we make getting your teeth cleaned as easy and simple as possible so that your smile can always look its best.

Do You Really Need to Come in for a Cleaning, or is Brushing Enough?

Brushing your teeth twice a day every day, just like the American Dental Association recommends, is great! As dentists, we cannot be happy enough that you are brushing! But a professional cleaning can do things that even the best brushing routine cannot handle. It also gives us the opportunity to spot tooth decay or gum disease before it gets worse.

How You Can Prepare For a Cleaning

The absolute best thing you can do to prepare for a professional cleaning is be vigilant about brushing and flossing your teeth every day, twice a day, in between your cleaning appointments. But if the hectic whirlwind of life has managed to get the better of you (it happens to all of us!), do not try to brush extra hard right before the cleaning as it can actually make it more difficult to see where we should be cleaning, and it can harm your enamel.

What You Can Expect During the Cleaning

Every cleaning starts with an examination of your teeth and gums. We look for any hot-spots of plaque and tartar activity that will need a little extra attention, and keep an eye out for early symptoms of tooth disease. After that, we get down to the cleaning itself, using special tools to remove stains and polish your teeth to their brightest and shiniest. We also give you a deep flossing and apply a fluoride treatment to help maintain the strength of your teeth’s enamel.

Occasionally some patients will experience mild discomfort and pain during a cleaning. This is normal and nothing to be concerned about. If you experience excessive pain, it could be a sign of advanced tooth decay or gum disease. The longer you go between cleanings, the more likely it is that you’ll experience some discomfort. If you are in pain, please let us know so that we can make accommodations!

When Should You Schedule Another Cleaning?

According to the official ADA recommendation, everyone should be getting their teeth cleaned once every six months. This is the absolute best way to fight build-ups of plaque before they get dangerous, and it gives us the chance to catch any signs of tooth disease before it can advance to a more serious stage. Plus, it helps keep your teeth always looking their best and keeps your appointments short so you can be out the door again.
