Root Canal

Diagram of tooth showing tooth root at HomeTown DentalContrary to what you may have heard, root canal therapy is actually one of the most powerful tools available in the restorative dentistry toolbox. When performed properly by a team of dental experts like we have here at HomeTown Dental at Belknap, root canals are an incredible way to relieve patients of debilitating pain. Plus, root canals are a more affordable option than other restorative procedures, like bridges and crowns.

What Is a Root Canal?

A root canal is not actually a procedure at all, but a location inside the structure of the tooth itself. Inside the tooth is a unique kind of soft tissue that is called “pulp.” Sometimes, this pulp can become infected. When this happens it can cause extreme pain, and if left untreated can progress to the point that the tooth is beyond saving and we are forced to extract it. Once the pulp itself is infected, fixing it becomes a difficult task. Unfortunately, it is not just a matter of cleaning out plaque like we can do elsewhere. Instead, we have to perform the procedure that is commonly known as a root canal, which is where one of our dental professionals carefully scrapes out the infected pulp and nerve. We then substitute special dental materials for the pulp.

Do You Need to Get a Root Canal?

Typically, an infected or inflamed pulp is something hard to ignore. While occasionally you might not notice any symptoms, infected pulp typically causes extreme toothaches, heightened sensitivity to the point of pain, or an abscess along the gumline. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms then you should give our office a call immediately to set up an appointment so we can diagnose what is really going on and see if a root canal is a good option for you. Root canals are also performed on teeth that have been seriously damaged. Sometimes, this damage is not visible externally but is instead internal. Just because you cannot see anything does not mean you do not run the risk of an abscess forming.

What You Can Expect During a Root Canal Treatment

Root canals are actually pretty straightforward procedures. One of our skilled dentists will first perform a deep cleaning of the tooth exterior before administering local anesthesia. With specialized tools, the infected pulp is removed and the canal is precisely sculpted for the filling. Once the filling is cemented then we clean the tooth and seal it up. This typically takes only a single appointment, but sometimes can take longer.
