Are you a Candidate for Veneers?

Dental veneers are a great option for people who want to restore their smile and maintain their natural teeth. First invented in the roaring twenties to give movie actors better smiles on set, they have evolved from a temporary fix to a trusted oral solution that lasts for over a decade. Thousands of dentists have used them to help countless patients improve their facial appearances.

What are Veneers?

A veneer is a custom-made porcelain shell designed to fit specifically over your tooth to cover stains, cracks, and chips. They are also used to change the shape of worn down teeth, close gaps in between your teeth, or alter the look of crooked teeth.

Dr. Guram or Dr. Mancera will place them carefully on the surface of your teeth, but will first need to remove a thin layer of enamel from the front side of your teeth. However, if you decide on no-prop veneers, we will need to remove a much smaller amount of enamel, if any at all.

Who are Good Candidates for Veneers?

Most dental patients are potential candidates for dental veneers. Here are some factors to keep in mind as you consider whether or not you qualify.

Dark Stains

Tooth whitening works wonders for mild to moderate teeth discoloration, but it won’t work on very dark stains. Porcelain veneers cover up stains like that, as well as internal stains from decay or fillings.

Minor or Multiple Cosmetic Fixes

Porcelain veneers work incredibly well at covering up fractures, chips, and misshapen teeth, so they’re a great choice for people who want to make minor cosmetic improvements in their teeth. Dental bonding can fix these flaws, but if you opt for veneers, the change will look much more natural.

Porcelain veneers are very versatile and can fix multiple cosmetic problems at once. For example, if you have discolored teeth, misshapen teeth, and chipped teeth, dental veneers can fix all of these problems. Otherwise, you’re looking at three separate procedures.

Good Overall Dental Health and Hygiene

Before we begin any form of cosmetic dental treatment, you must have healthy teeth and gums, although it is possible to qualify for veneers after you receive restorative treatment, if necessary.

It is also crucial for you to practice proper oral hygiene. Since the veneers are placed on the surface of your regular teeth, you must keep them clean and healthy by brushing and flossing daily and having professional cleanings and exams biannually. Veneers last for years if cared for properly.

Sufficient Tooth Enamel

The enamel provides a stable bonding surface for the veneers. Dr. Guram or Dr. Mancera will take off some of it to make space for the porcelain, but we’ll leave the underlying layer of enamel. You need to have enough enamel on your teeth for the veneers to attach correctly.

Straight Teeth

Veneers are meant to fix slightly crooked teeth. However, if you have a misaligned bite or multiple misaligned teeth, veneers likely won’t work. Extreme misalignment exerts force on your teeth and can crack the porcelain over time.

Avoiding Bad Habits

Bruxism, which is constant teeth grinding, also causes damage to the porcelain, resulting in fractures and chips. Frequently chewing hard objects like ice, nails or pencils is not good for your dental health. If you can’t stop bad habits such as these, you might not qualify as a candidate for dental veneers.
