Dental Bridges
Dentist Fort Worth

Rendering of jaw with dental bridge from HomeTown Dental in Fort Worth.A bridge is a device used to replace one or more missing teeth. A bridge is more than just a cosmetic operation, it is a truly restorative procedure that helps you talk and eat normally again, supports your facial structure, and protects the rest of your natural teeth from drifting out of place. HomeTown Dental at Belknap can help restore your smile with a custom-made bridge designed just for you.

What Are Bridges?

A bridge consists of two crowns (caps that go over natural teeth) that “bridge” where a missing tooth is. These two crowns anchor a false tooth between them. A bridge can be made from a variety of different materials depending on your budget and health needs, including porcelain, gold, and alloys.

What Types of Bridges Are There?

There are four types of bridges. A traditional bridge is most similar to the one described above and is also the most common bridge type. It is best for patients who have natural teeth on either side of their missing tooth or teeth. A cantilever bridge is similar but requires only one crown to anchor the false tooth. A Maryland bridge is also similar to a traditional bridge, but instead of using crowns it relies on a bonded latticework of metal or porcelain. It requires natural teeth on either side of the gap. An implant-supported bridge needs neither crowns nor natural teeth and is considered the most robust type of bridge but also the most invasive. It utilizes prosthetic implants to hold the bridge in place.

Is a Bridge Right For You?

Bridges are a powerful option for patients with missing teeth. Even after a tooth falls out or is extracted it can continue to have damaging effects on the rest of your mouth as your remaining natural teeth shift out of place. This can cause the collapse of your facial structure as your jawbone shrinks from lack of use, making it hard to talk, chew, and smile. A dental bridge can fix all this. We recommend bridges for patients who need more strength than a crown can offer them.

What You Can Expect When Getting a Bridge

Getting a bridge will likely require at least two separate appointments. During the first visit we will prepare the crowns on either side of where the missing teeth are and make a mold of your mouth. Using this mold, we will design the complete bridge device so that it matches the unique contours of your mouth. It will take some time to create the bridge, so in the meantime we will give you a temporary bridge to protect your teeth and gums. Once the permanent bridge is finished you can come back in and we will place it. Follow-up appointments might be necessary to monitor how well the bridge fits and make adjustments if necessary. It is important to carefully brush your teeth and clean around and under the bridge to maintain the strength and lifespan of the device.
